Mom's Flower Painting

This is a painting that I did for my mom for a Christmas present. It was painted in December of 2003 and I think I finished it on the 22nd. I cut that one close….

I really haven't done very many paintings. I pretty much have NO CLUE what I am doing. I think the last time I attempted to paint anything was about 13 years ago. My decision to take up painting again came from a visit to Stephanie Pui-Mun Law's site. If you haven't seen her work, go there and check it out. Anyway... knowing how I have this tendency to loose interest in things, I decided to experiment with what I had lying around before I went out and bought a paint set that I wasn't ever going to use. So... I pulled out my acrylic craft paint, a piece of drawing paper, my odd collection of brushes, and an old book called 'Flower Studies and Techniques' by Susan Abdella and started my project

Using the book as a reference I came up with a sketch I liked. I wanted to do some kind of daisy-like flower and a yellow/gold background so it would match my mom’s new kitchen color. Unfortunately, the paints I had were: a) way too thin and b) not exactly the right colors. Needless to say, it didn’t come out anything like what the instructions said it should. So I started experimenting by trying colored pencils and watercolor pencils. They helped, but it still wasn’t coming out like I wanted it to. Fortunately I got a student’s watercolor set for my birthday and it saved my picture. So I finished it using a combination of everything mentioned above to achieve the final results.

Though I think I used just about all the wrong materials to create it, I really like how it turned out. It looks even better matted and framed and I get a LOT of complements on it. Best of all, my mom REALY LOVES IT, and I suppose that is what really matters. =)
