Flower
Blossom
This painting was my first try at a project a friend at work asked me to do. She wanted something with Kanji on it. I think she just wanted some big character on a piece of paper. But I couldn’t leave well enough alone so… Inspired by her request, a drawing on a small plate from Japan, a picture by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, & an episode of Scheewe Art, I drew this. I don't think the writing on it is kanji, as requested, but more likely either hiragana or katakana. I'm sure anyone who can actually write Japanese script is laughing at my rendition. I copied it off of the REALY SMALL symbols that were in my Japanese-English dictionary. They are supposed to say "Hana ga saku" which means "flower blossom". I hope I at least came close. After much work trying to figure out how to color this without it looking crappy, I finally came up with this finished version. I was originally going to paint a background for it, but the 90lb paper I used would have warped too much, so I decided to leave it white. I first shaded it a bit with colored pencils, which I washed with alcohol to break down the wax bonding and make it appear more paint like. I had read an on-line tutorial (Which I can’t find now. =( ) a while back explaining the technique. While my attempt to duplicate it didn’t come out perfect (they probably didn’t use rubbing alcohol), I did get the desired effect once I washed over that with watercolors. I think I inked in the Japanese script. The painting was finished 6-19-04. |
