Speed
Racer
I painted this as a gift to Lisa, a friend at work. She had seen Dina's
Speed Racer picture and wanted one for herself.
I finished this one on 6-1-04. I inked in the pencil sketch I did and then
painted it with watercolors. The pose was inspired by one done for the new
version of Speed Racer. I thought it would be cool to see all the classic
characters in that pose.
The one thing I learned painting this was
that part of my problems with painting was the fact that I had purchased
some really cheep student watercolors. I'm going to try a few different
(and hopefully better ^_~ ) brands in future paintings. Unfortunately
my budget doesn't allow me to just chuck out the lot and buy new.
I also used a heavier paper on this project, about 100-120lb (250g/m2).
All I had previously was 90lb paper, which buckles quite a bit when wet.
I really haven't had any luck stretching it, so I will probably use up
what I have making cards or practicing techniques. It seems to work well
enough for that.
Unfortunately, due to paint problems, I couldn't shade it as well as I
would have liked, but I think it turned out ok. Lisa really seemed to
like it, and that’s what really matters.
